A Practical Guide to Resizing Images

Resizing changes pixels, not just file size

Resizing changes the width and height of an image in pixels. File size follows indirectly: halving both the width and the height leaves only a quarter of the pixels, so the file usually becomes much smaller too. If a form or website complains that your photo is too big, resizing is often the most effective fix.

Common target sizes

  • Instagram feed post: 1080 × 1080 px (square) or 1080 × 1350 px (portrait)
  • Instagram or Facebook story: 1080 × 1920 px
  • YouTube thumbnail: 1280 × 720 px
  • Full HD wallpaper or slide: 1920 × 1080 px
  • Blog or article image: around 1200 px wide is plenty for most layouts

Keep the proportions yourself

Width and height are set independently, so entering numbers that do not match your photo's shape will stretch it. To keep the proportions, work out the new height with this formula: new height = new width × (original height ÷ original width). For example, a 4000 × 3000 photo resized to 1200 px wide should be 900 px tall.

Shrinking is safe, enlarging has limits

Making an image smaller keeps it sharp. Making it larger cannot add detail that was never captured, so the browser estimates the new pixels and the result looks softer. A modest increase is fine, but doubling or tripling the size will be noticeably blurry. Everything happens locally in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

No — width and height are set independently, so if you enter dimensions that don't match your original image's ratio, the result will stretch or squash. To keep the original proportions, calculate the second dimension yourself (new height = new width × original height ÷ original width). For a square result from a non-square photo, use Crop Image first, which crops to a square, then resize to your exact pixel dimensions.

Yes, technically — but resizing up doesn't add real detail. The tool interpolates (estimates) new pixels between the existing ones, so enlarging a small image will look softer or blurrier than a photo actually taken at that resolution. It works fine for modest increases; doubling or tripling the original size will show visible softness.

Web images only need to match their actual display size — a banner shown at 1200px wide gains nothing from being uploaded at 4000px, just slower page loads. Printing is different: it's measured in DPI (dots per inch), not just pixels, so a photo printed at 8×10 inches needs roughly 2400×3000px at 300 DPI to look sharp.

Yes. Resizing redraws the image onto a canvas at the new dimensions and re-encodes it, so JPEG and WEBP outputs go through their compression step again even if you keep the same format and don't touch a quality setting. This is unavoidable — there's no way to resize pixel dimensions without regenerating the file.
