How Image Compression Works (and How to Get the Best Result)

What compression actually does

Compression makes an image file smaller by storing the same picture more efficiently. JPG and WEBP use lossy compression: they discard fine detail that the human eye is unlikely to notice, and the quality slider controls how aggressively they do it. PNG is lossless, so it keeps every pixel exactly and the slider has little effect on it. For big savings on photographs, JPG or WEBP is almost always the better choice.

Choosing a quality setting

There is no single correct number. The right setting depends on where the image will be used. As a starting point:

  • 95% for photography and anything you may print or edit again
  • 80% for websites and blog posts, which is the sweet spot for most photos
  • 60% for social media, where the platform recompresses your upload anyway
  • 30% for email attachments where small size matters more than detail

Why smaller images matter

Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. Oversized files slow down loading, use up visitors' mobile data, and are one of the most common reasons a page scores badly on speed tests. Page speed is also a factor in how search engines rank a page, so compressing images before you upload them is one of the easiest improvements you can make.

Private by design

Compression runs entirely inside your browser using the Canvas API and a compression library. Files up to 20 MB each are supported, you can add several at once, and nothing is ever uploaded to a server. That also means it works fast, because there is no waiting for an upload to finish.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Individual files up to 20MB each, with no fixed limit on how many you upload at once. Very large source images (above roughly 4000px on the longest edge) are automatically downscaled during compression to keep processing fast in the browser — if you need to keep the original resolution, use Resize Image separately at your target dimensions first.

It controls the JPEG/WEBP encoder's quality setting, which changes how aggressively similar-colored blocks of pixels get merged during compression. Above roughly 80% the visual difference is usually invisible; below 50% you'll start to see blockiness in areas with fine detail or text. PNG output stays lossless regardless of the slider since PNG doesn't support a quality parameter — only JPEG and WEBP output actually change with it.

JPEG has no alpha channel — it can't store transparency at all. When a transparent PNG is compressed to JPEG, every transparent pixel is filled with white before encoding, since the format has no other way to represent "no color here." If you need to keep transparency, keep the output format as PNG or WEBP instead of JPEG.

It's a single encoding pass at whatever quality percentage the slider is set to — it doesn't iteratively search for a target file size. If you need a guaranteed exact file size (like under 50KB for a form upload) rather than a quality percentage, use the dedicated Compress to 50KB or Compress to 100KB tools instead, which do search iteratively for that.
