Choosing the Right Image Format

What each format is good for

  • JPG: the standard for photographs. Small files, but no transparency.
  • PNG: best for logos, icons and screenshots. Lossless and supports transparency, but files are large for photos.
  • WEBP: a modern format that is usually smaller than both JPG and PNG and supports transparency. Ideal for websites.
  • BMP: an old uncompressed format. Files are very large, so use it only when a legacy program requires it.

When converting makes sense

Converting a PNG photo or screenshot to JPG or WEBP often shrinks it dramatically. Going the other way does not improve anything: turning a JPG into a PNG cannot restore detail that was already lost, it just creates a bigger file. Convert when you need compatibility (for example, a site that only accepts JPG) or a smaller size.

The transparency pitfall

JPG cannot store transparency. When you convert a transparent PNG to JPG, the see-through areas are filled with solid white. If you need to keep a transparent background, convert to PNG or WEBP instead.

A note on quality

Converting to a lossy format such as JPG or WEBP re-encodes the image, which can lower quality slightly. Avoid converting the same file back and forth repeatedly, and keep your original. Conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

JPEG has no alpha channel, so it physically cannot store transparent pixels. When you convert, every transparent area is filled with solid white before the JPEG encoder runs, since there's no other way to represent "nothing" in that format. To keep transparency, convert to PNG or WEBP instead — both support an alpha channel.

It depends on the direction. Converting PNG (lossless) to JPEG or WEBP (lossy) does lose some quality, since those formats compress by discarding data your eye is less likely to notice. Converting the other way — JPEG to PNG, for example — doesn't lose any additional quality, but also can't recover detail that was already lost in the original JPEG encoding.

JPEG is lossy and has no transparency, but produces small files for photos. PNG is lossless with full transparency support, but file sizes are much larger for photo-like images. WEBP supports both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency, and generally produces smaller files than either JPEG or PNG at equivalent quality — the main tradeoff is that a handful of older tools and email clients still don't support it.

Yes — upload multiple files and they're all converted to the format you select in a single pass. Use the Batch Processing tool if you want to combine format conversion with resizing or compression in the same step.
