Writing a great post is only half the job โ how you title it, describe it, and structure your keyword usage has a real, measurable effect on whether it actually gets found in search. Here's what to check before you hit publish.
1. Title Length
Google typically displays somewhere around 50-60 characters of a title before truncating it with '...'. A title that's too short wastes an opportunity to include your keyword and context; a title that's too long gets cut off in search results, hiding your value proposition from potential readers.
2. Meta Description Length
Aim for roughly 120-160 characters. This is the snippet shown under your title in search results โ it doesn't directly affect ranking, but a compelling, correctly-sized description meaningfully improves click-through rate, which matters for traffic even when rankings stay the same.
3. Focus Keyword Placement
- Does your focus keyword appear in the title?
- Does it appear in the meta description?
- Does it appear within the first 100 words of your content?
These early placements signal to search engines what the page is actually about, and they also reassure human readers scanning the result that they've found the right page.
4. Keyword Density โ Don't Overdo It
A healthy keyword density is typically around 0.5% to 2.5% of total word count. Below that range, the keyword may be too sparse for search engines to clearly associate with the page. Above it, the content starts to read as repetitive or spammy โ both to readers and to search algorithms, which can actively penalize keyword stuffing.
5. Content Length
There's no single 'correct' word count, but very short content (under 300 words) often struggles to rank for competitive keywords simply because it can't cover a topic in enough depth. Longer, more thorough content tends to naturally attract more relevant keyword variations and answer more of a reader's underlying questions.
6. Readability
Readability scores (like Flesch Reading Ease) estimate how easy your text is to read based on sentence length and word complexity. For most blog content, aiming for 'Standard' to 'Easy' readability keeps your writing accessible to a broad audience โ overly complex, dense paragraphs can increase bounce rate even if the content is technically excellent.
